CrowdBuilding was founded in 2024 with the mission to make housing development more sustainable, socially inclusive, and affordable. The online platform connects people who want to collaboratively develop and build homes, while providing access to the necessary expertise. In doing so, CrowdBuilding offers a solution to a pressing issue in the Netherlands: there is a significant housing shortage, and the homes being built are often not sustainable enough.
Too few circular materials are used in construction, and sustainable energy solutions are often lacking—partly due to the profit-maximizing approach of traditional developers. CrowdBuilding offers an alternative where people are in control of the process and can build their own homes using circular materials and energy-efficient methods.
CrowdBuilding’s business model focuses on collaboration with municipalities. By providing a platform that connects home seekers, self-builders, and local initiatives with available land, CrowdBuilding addresses the urgent demand for affordable and sustainable housing.
The company is structured as steward-owned (separating ownership and control), with the goal of transferring the enterprise to the CrowdBuilding Foundation by 2032. A cap is placed on returns to investors (maximum 3x), with all additional profits reinvested to advance the company’s sustainability mission. This aligns with the core principles of steward-ownership.
