To keep the world livable, our CO2 emissions must be drastically reduced. Switching to sustainable energy use is a big part of that. Through heating in the absence of oxygen (pyrolysis), Autarkize produces both green gas to replace fossil fuels and biocarbon (biochar) from low-grade waste streams in which CO2 can be permanently stored.
Autarkize technology makes it possible to produce both high-quality biochar and high-quality biogas. This biochar, obtained from a variety of low-grade waste streams, ensures that the CO2 released during the heating process is permanently stored. The biochar product itself can be used for multiple purposes, for example as a soil conditioner or in sustainable building materials. The biogas produced can be used as heat, or converted into energy. This makes the system self-sufficient (autarkic).
Autarkize technology is the result of more than 20 years of development and operational experience. Although pyrolysis and biogas production are not new in themselves, Autarkize stands out because of the innovative way the system was developed. The unique ability to use various low-grade residual streams in the process, and produce both biogas and biochar, makes this technology special. The compact container design also allows for flexible use in different locations directly at the customer’s premises, without the need for complicated structures and large spaces.
Intensive agriculture has led to soil degradation and microbiologically depleted soils in many regions. As a result, plant growth is often possible only with intensive use of chemicals. The decrease in humus also reduces water retention, making soils vulnerable in times of drought. Biochar may offer a solution here, as its structure allows it to retain water and soil nutrients. In addition, the biochar produced can be offered on the market and, because of its permanent CO2 storage, CO2 certificates can also be sold.
